Farewell Student Library Aides

It has been a delight working with all of my student library media aides this school year.  I will especially miss my 8th graders who have brought a sense of maturity, respect, and example to other students in the library media center.

Cody, Justin, Alyssa, Anthony, "Wiggie" and "Darty" will be greatly missed, and I wish you all the best as you embark on a new journey as freshmen at Arab High School.  Seize the opportunity to participate in new activities, help others, and be role models for your peers.

Need to know if there is an Accelerated Reader quiz for the book you want to read?  No problem!  Search online and you'll also find the interest levels, point values, and reading levels for your favorite AR books!  Best of all, you can access AR BookFinder on any computer with internet access.  Parent can easily search AR BookFinder to assist students with selecting great books to read.  Having trouble finding an AR quiz for a favorite author or book?  Contact Mrs. Griggs for assistance.

The Arab Junior High School Library Media Center is comprised of a spacious reading and reference area along with a state-of-the-art computer lab.  LMC hours are from 7:20 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with extended morning hours for 8th-grade early arrivals from 7:10 to 7:20.  This allows for student access before, during, and after school hours each day.  Extended hours can be arranged for school-related or civic activities. The LMC utilizes flexible scheduling to better serve students and teachers through its reading area, reference area and computer lab.  Whole classes, small groups and individual students frequent the library media center.  Our door is always open, and students are welcome to visit the LMC as often as needed each week.  Our collection includes books, periodicals, software, audiovisual materials, equipment and artwork.  The collection is enhanced with online resources.  Books are searchable on each computer by AR reading levels and point values.  A large flat-screen LCD TV, sound system, wireless technologies, and SmartBoard enhance instruction and multimedia presentations. Students are encouraged to check-out two books at a time and may keep them for two weeks. Students may renew books for an additional two weeks.  Computers, scanners, laser printers and copiers are available for student use.  The LMC staff operates a school store with basic school supplies including pencils, mechanical pencils, pens, ruled notebook paper, graph paper, compasses, protractors, glue sticks, poster paper.  School store hours are 7:20 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The AJHS LMC has finished up a school year complete with several Guys Read and Girls Read luncheons.  Guys Read and Girls Read are the LMC's book clubs for AJHS students.  Each grading period guys and girls sign-up to share in the experience of reading and discussing a popular young adult book.  Past titles include City of Ember, Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie, Uglies, and The Bronze Bow, Esperanza Rising and Castaway: Survivor's  Guide. Book club participants are invited to a special luncheon in the library media center where they are rewarded with special treats and prizes. Check back soon for the announcement of book club titles for next school year!

Mrs. Griggs accepts applications for student library media aides at the end of each school year.  Interested students must obtain parental approval and recommendations from their teachers. They cannot be involved in other activities or courses that conflict with being enrolled as a library media aide for either a semester or full-year course.  Duties primarily consist of checking in/out books, collecting fines, assisting students, re-shelving materials, making patron cards, cleaning and assisting the library media specialist with other duties as assigned.  Student aides are expected to be well-read, mature students capable of assisting others with LMC technologies.  Contact Mrs. Griggs for more information about becoming a student aide.

Hi!  I'm Shannon Griggs, the library media specialist at Arab Junior High School.  I have an MLIS degree from the University of Alabama and national certification through the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). I've enjoyed building upon the library media center's collection within a new, spacious facility and experiencing first-hand the benefits of state-of-the-art information technologies on library media services.   As a former high school English and French teacher, I value this opportunity to promote literacy beyond the classroom to the school level!  I enjoy working as the web administrator for AJHS, and I also volunteer as the librarian and web administrator for my church.  I hope the full scope of my work as media specialist and web administrator connects students and teachers with the information and materials they need to meet their educational goals.  Outside of my life at AJHS, I enjoy camping, canoeing, and rafting with my family and friends.  Each day, I squeeze in what precious little time I can to read both for myself and to my children.
