Phonics

The kindergarten teachers at Arab Primary School use the Saxon Phonics and Spelling program.  Saxon Phonics and Spelling is a success-oriented program that enables most children to develop a solid foundation in phonics and thus become successful readers and spellers.  The Saxon lessons present new information in small increments, which is reviewed daily throughout the school year.  This method provides the children with the repetition and practice they need to achieve success.

Math Curriculum

Saxon Math is the program used to teach mathematics in kindergarten.  This program teaches concepts in a sequential manner. Most of the lessons start with some kind of hands-on activity to introduce the concept being taught.  There is a hand-out with every lesson that provides the students with a chance to practice what was taught previously.  Handwriting is also a part of the Saxon Math curriculum.  The children are shown how to form numbers correctly and then they are given the chance to practice forming numbers on a regular basis.

The skills taught using Kindergarten Saxon Math are the foundations for the skills that will be taught and expanded upon in first grade.

Unit

Each week our kindergarten classes focus on a different unit.  These units follow the Alabama Course of Study for Science and Social Studies.  Some of the units covered are: safety, community helpers, simple machines, holidays, and patriotism.

Each week a different concept will also be covered, such as: left/right, top/middle/bottom and same/different.

It is our goal at Arab Primary School to develop well rounded students by providing them quality instruction in these areas.
