Arab Primary School Science Lab

The science lab at Arab Primary School enhances the Alabama Course of Study in the area of science by extending the basic study of the scientific method. The science lab is well-equipped and provides every student with thirty minutes of intensive science instruction weekly. An array of topics is covered that include earth, physical, and life sciences as well as social studies and geography.

Science is all around us, and the science lab provides opportunities to demonstrate to the students how science is integrated in many different areas. A study of the life of a paleontologist is one example of a unit of study. This unit encompasses an exploration of the job of a paleontologist, and as the study expands, students learn about other countries, where they are located, and their traditions, customs, and cultures.

Other studies are conducted according to the grade levels and ability levels of students. Topics include: animals and habitats; past, present and future, which includes possibilities for tomorrow’s discoveries; insects; and properties of water.

Experiments are conducted to extend classroom instruction. Students are provided lab worksheets, graphs, scientific tools, and books to explore on an individual basis and to follow up with group discussions of their predictions and methods. Research is enhanced by hands-on experiments, video researches, and question and answer sessions. These explorations occur in a relaxed atmosphere that is conducive to discussion and which will hopefully spark an interest in future science careers.

Students are provided with opportunities to further expand their thoughts and enthusiasm through the use of a science lab journal. Students use journals to submit their research, conclusions, and expressions of their points of view, and they place their work in a science lab “mailbox” in the lab. These journals are provided to stimulate their interest in science beyond the classroom setting.

Questions of the week are provided on a variety of topics that refer to science. Students often turn in extra research papers, pictures and stories related to the questions out of their enthusiasm over the topic.

Come join the fun in the science lab. You never know what you might discover!
