    Reaching the Students

The counseling department at Arab Junior High School addresses the variety of needs of each individual child.  The educational needs of each student must be identified and met during the middle school years.  However, there is more to each person than educational needs.  The middle school years are an impressionable time both socially and emotionally.  Without addressing these two significant components of personality, no true success can be achieved. 

 

Counseling Goals

The goal of the counseling department is to assist each student in reaching his/her full potential in all areas. By integrating counseling into the normal school day, the pursuit of this goal should be not only challenging but also rewarding for everyone concerned.

 

Counseling Services and Programs

Individual Counseling is provided to assist students in coping with personal issues.

Small Group Counseling is offered to respond to the students' identified needs and/or interests.  Meeting with a group of peers often minimizes the students' fears of being the "only one" with a problem.

Large Group Guidance is conducted in large group lessons within the classroom setting to address issues of concern to all:  drug awareness and prevention, violence prevention, goal setting, etc.

Rising S.T.A.R.S. (Striving To Achieve Real Success): This is a new program designed to assist 6th grade students in their transition to junior high school. A small number of students are invited to participate in this program designed to foster confidence, organization, and positive study habits.

**NEWLY ADDED FEATURE**

I hope you enjoy this new feature. In the past I have provided articles to parents on a monthly basis through a subscription to The Parent Institute. While these articles were useful, I am more excited about this new addition. The “Today’s Tip for Parents” is updated DAILY. Many of the other topics found under “School Success Ideas for Parents” are updated weekly. Please take advantage of this new feature. I hope it helps to make this school year successful.
