The Alabama Literacy Act (or ALA) was passed and signed into law in 2019 by Governor Kay Ivey. While
there is a retention component for third-grade students, the law was written as a prevention law
and works to ensure students enrolled in Alabama public schools are reading on or above grade level
by the end of the third grade.
