Alabama Numeracy Act

The Alabama Numeracy Act is a statewide initiative designed to strengthen mathematics instruction in the early grades and ensure that all students develop strong foundational math skills. The law emphasizes early identification, targeted support, and high-quality instruction so students build number sense, problem-solving abilities, and confidence in mathematics.

Beginning in kindergarten through grade 5, schools use multiple measures of student performance to monitor math development and identify students who may need additional support. Instruction is aligned to the Alabama Course of Study Standards and focuses on developing conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and mathematical reasoning.
